Morning came early. We showered and went down to the lobby for breakfast. We wanted to book an afternoon excursion and evening theater trip but we were warned against it, that the tour operator could not guarantee our return in time for the nightly show. So we booked the evening show and took the morning tour.
I had visited St. Paul’s Cathedral. What a wonderful place, so large and full of history. I remember St Micheals in Chicago and remember thinking it was a cathedral. Nope, this was. The stained glass, the majesty and the history of St Pauls was awe inspiring.
We saw our first palace guard outside Prince Charles is home and also our first Bobby. The Bobbys are not as prevalent as I would’ve thought. We also caught a glimpse of The Royal Cavalry, very majestic on their horses. The tour let us our near the Tower of London, so we set out on our own. In the afternoon we set to tour the Tower. The yeoman (Beefeater) was very funny and knowledgeable. The Crown Jewels, while impressive, were rather plain. They were not as glittery as Hollywood portrays them. We also learned that the UK will supposedly stand as long as there are ravens in tower. It was getting late and we needed to get back in time to meet up for dinner. We found the tubes in London are very efficient.
That evening we went to “Ye Cheshire Cheese“, one of England’s oldest pubs and the food there was very good. We sat with four older ladies who just came off of their tour. They were tired and told us that they had a really good time.
After dinner we went to a London show. It was a production of “The Complete Works of William Shakespeare, abridged”. It was very funny! The performers called themselves “The Reduced Shakespearean Company”. I laughed so hard that my sides hurt.
We went back to the hotel and packed for the morning. We were going to sleep well.
