We did get a chance to swim on the first and the third island though so it was not that bad. When we got to the first island though we found no changing rooms so since we really want to swim in the Aegean. We changed right there on the rocks. Of course we cover ourselves with a towel and changed under it, But it was a sight. As we were waiting on each other to finish, we noticed a woman on the beach. She had no towel and just changed right there and walking pretty much au-natural.
Throughout this trip, I’ve been protective of Teresa. Oh, don’t get me wrong, I know she is aware of how animals are slaughtered and such, but I do not want to expose her to it if I can help it. Many days ago, near the beginning of our tour, we had been walking down the street and walked in front of a butcher’s shop. It was not like what we have in the US. There were whole boars, ducks and geese, and cow’s heads in the window. Even for a carnivore, it was a little unsettling at first. Like I said, it is not a common site in the states like it is here. So whenever we got close to one of those shops, I would do a quick scan and find SOMETHING else across the way to point out to Teresa.
Why do I bring this up now? Well on the second island, we were walking along the streets where some vendors had set up shop. As we approached, I saw the vendor open a bucket and start hanging live octopus on hooks along the top of his stall. When someone would come up, they would point to the one they wanted and the shop keeper would take it down and throw it on a hot grill. Well, I looked around and quickly spotted another colorful booth. In my haste, I saw the colors and did not see that the vendor was doing THE SAME THING when I pointed Teresa to the booth.
The third island was better. The beach here was sandy, not rocky and the water was warm and inviting. The only bad part? We did not get enough time there before we had to head back to the boat.
We got back to Athens around 8:30. We did not have dinner yet nor have we set our goodbyes to our travel mates. Most of us had an early wake up calls and flights. Chris, Chad, Teresa and I decided to go to McDonald’s for a quick dinner. It was no different than the ones in the US, except they have beer on tap.
