Cruising the Rhine River in Germany

September 11, 2000
Oh my god it is too early, we were up before the sun, trying to get a jump on traffic. We are leaving the Netherlands on our way to Rhineland Germany.
Cologne Cathedral, Germany

Cologne Cathedral, Germany

We made a Quick stop in Cologne Germany. It was enough time to take a tour of the cathedral. The learned that during World War II, almost all of Cologne have been destroyed during the bombings. But the Cathedral was a landmark that the pilots were using and they left it standing. The outer walls were scarred from bombs and bullets. The inside was breathtaking. I wish we could’ve stayed longer and Cologne, it is known to have a most beautiful zoo.

From there we took an our cruise down the river Rhine. It was most enjoyable of the cruise with small towns along the river side and castles along the hills. It Is very picturesque. Here I was hoping to get a good German beer. I was disappointed, though. This boat only had Budweiser, and Miller and Löwenbräu (which I could get in the US and is Amercianized). After the cruise, we went to Heidelberg. I had fleeting memories of this castle, having been here when I was younger. The castle was destroyed by Louis XIV after the town denied  him entrance. We did not get to visit the castle runes itself, which is why we  have to come back and see it on another trip. We did walk around the town center and we left for our hotel and dinner.
