Lucerne, Switzerland, bridging cultures.

September 13, 2000
Teresa has a cold. We are not staying in Lucerne, but in a mountain ski resort called Engelberg at the -TressHotel. During the summers, it is slow. I went to the pharmacy in this little ski town and did my best I could. Teresa did make the morning tour and we opted out of the afternoon tour and went shopping and touring the city of Lucerne with Chad and Chris. Lucerne had a covered bridge call Kapellbrücke or Chapel Bridge. The bridge is unique because it contains a number of interior paintings dating back to the 17th century, although many of them were destroyed along with a larger part of the centuries-old bridge in a 1993 fire. It was restored and the Kapellbrücke is the oldest wooden covered bridge in Europe. It is also the world’s oldest surviving truss bridge. It serves as the city’s symbol and as one of Switzerland’s main tourist attractions. We found some wonderful toys like the ones I was looking for in our “black forest shopping”.  Chad found a beer stein he really liked. In the bottom was a watermark design of a dragon. It was really cool and one of a kind in the shop. Chad asked the owner if he would ship to the US, but the cost of the Stein and the shipping or cost for it was high. He hemmed and hawed and in the end didn’t get it. Me? I liked it too. So I did up buying it. I don’t recall if I ever did tell him. We decided not to wait for the bus and took the train back, except for sitting in the smoking section it was a good trip.  We’re done laundry the night before. Nothing fancy like with a washing machine or anything, we used the sink and tub. We learned about fast drying, water wicking travel clothes and had brought some with us. Apparently they didn’t “quick enough” as after hanging out on the balcony for the day they were still rather damp, I was a little concerned that they would not dry before tomorrow morning. We crawled into bed and listened to the sounds of the night through the open window as we fell fast asleep.
