Traveling home

September 25, 2000
My oh my, 4:30am came too quickly for our trip home. We were smart and packed the night before, so it gave us a little time. Laszlo had said that that there would be some breakfast, even though the restaurant was not open. Well coffee (which neither of us drink) and coffee cake did not do. We got on the plane in Athens after being shuffled out of it and because some people were late. We had to wait on the tarmac for 20 minutes. As we were about to land in Munich, they came over the intercom and asked us to applaud her new captain. It was his first landing. It was all done and instruments as the fog had pretty much made visibility zero. 9 hours! That is the flight time from Munich to Chicago, and were an E-340, something similar to the Boeing 777, but without many of the amenities. An hour into the flight, they served the meal. The choice was salmon or salmon, since they had run out of chicken. They also did not have a vegetarian meal for Teresa. I tried the salmon while the attendant said she would check for Teresa. It was awful. The attendant never did return. Being tired did not help Teresa. She was so upset, she was in tears, hungry and miserable. I, of course, shared her misery. An hour had passed since the lunch trays have been collected and another attendant was there to check out our needs. I asked her for some crackers or some cookies, explaining that to her that Teresa had had nothing to eat. She noticed how upset Teresa was and she was very sympathetic. She explained that meal mix-ups happen, that sometimes people take something they should not just because it looks or smells better. She said she would see what she could find and went to the back of the plane. Within what seemed like 30 seconds, she was back with a vegetarian tray. Needless to say we were both grateful. This attendant seem to have adopted us, checking on us often. When the flight was over I think her hugged her and tipped her 20 German marks. We finally made it home around 6:30 PM. It was cold, it was raining, but was home. We had a good time and made some good friends. We kept in touch with some and lost touch with others. Some have since passed, hearing about it in Christmas letters and the like. Still, we would not have traded this trip for anything.
